”Besides the charming colonial area, Pyin Oo Lwin offers magnificent waterfalls and beautiful botanical gardens.”
Pyin OO Lwin or also called Maymyo is a lovely resort town, which has preserved the charm of the British colonial-era with beautiful half-timbered houses, gardens and carriages. The city used to be a summer retreat during the British rule, as the altitude of 1,100 m offers a cool climate, allowing the people to escape the heat. Besides the charming colonial area, Pyin OO Lwin offers magnificent waterfalls and beautiful botanical gardens.
There are several impressive waterfalls in Pyin Oo Lwin, including the famous Anisakan Falls, which are a must see when you are in Maymyo. The height of the waterfall is nearly 122 m and the depth is about 91 m.
To get there you walk through a beautiful forest trail, The sound of falling water and the touch of the cold water will eliminate your fatigue. In addition, you are able to watch the sunset from the terrace of The View restaurant, from where you can further admire the Anisakan’s waterfalls.
The Botanical gardens are officially named Kandawgyi Gardens and founded by Alex Roger, a forest researcher officer, with the help of Lady Cuffe, botanist in 1915. The garden has many collections of flora and fauna, including orchids, roses, many exotic fruits, pines, bamboo forests. The gardens have a viewing platform, from where you have a view on the park and across Pyin Oo Lwin and the surrounding area.
The best way to reach this town, is via the famous Goteik viaduct, this bridge is part of the railway which connects the towns Pyin Oo Lwin with Lashio, both cities of the Shan State. The Goteik Viaduct is the highest bridge in Myanmar and the whole railway runs from Mandalay to Hsipaw. The bridge was completed in 1901 and was constructed as a way for the British Empire to expand their influence in the region.
The 670 meters long and 102 meters high railway bridge impresses by its narrowness as well as by the panorama it offers on the surroundings. Leaving Mandalay in a southerly direction, the train heads north-east across the plains. As the sun rises, the train arrives at the foot of the mountains and begins its ascent. Shortly after reaching the plateau, the train arrives at Maymyo. It will then meander through the countryside to the highest point of the journey: the crossing of a spectacular valley on the Gokteik Viaduct. It is a breathtaking experience to take this train.
Come and experience this colonial town, whit its beautiful gardens, scenery and traditional horse carriages.
