Kalaw, in the heart of the vast Shan State, gained popularity with British civil servants who frequented the hill station during the colonial era to escape the fierce summer heat of the planes. Located at an altitude of 1,300 metres and about 50 kilometres from Inle Lake, the small sleepy town is inhabited by Shan, Burmese, Nepalese and other ethnic minorities. It also serves as a popular starting point for excursions by foot, bicycle or car into the surrounding areas.

The region’s key sights include Myin Ma Thi village, which is home to a temple and cave network, and the Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp, an initiative which cares for and rehabilitates elephants who previously worked in the local logging industry.

At the heart of the Colonial town, lies a market where villagers from the surrounding hills come to sell their product. The market is very lively and you are able to see fresh products from the hills and meet the local villagers. South West of the Market, you will find Hnee Pagoda with a 500 year old bamboo Buddha. Walking there, you will pass old restored cottages and churches which are remainders of the British colonial times. The city is inviting to just stroll around the streets and admire this tranquil laidback town.

Furthermore, Kalaw is a starting point for many great trekking to the Inle Lake or Pindaya. You will come across beautiful mountain scenery, unique flora and fauna and sleep overnight at a monastery. The trek usually last around 2 days, however can be adjusted to your needs. It is a great experience to experience the countryside and beautiful nature that the country has to offer.

The Elephant Camp, which is located in Kalaw, is a care camp for retired elephants. The journey into this camp is not quite like those in which you might find performances or elephant rides. The elephants here are looked after and housed by Tun Tun, their veterinarian caretaker, along with their team of mahouts, upon a vast estate populated by butterflies, orchids and birds of vibrant hue. Following the initial attractions, you will learn to feed the elephants as well as to bathe them within the river, enjoying a unique moment alongside these gentle giants.

Kalaw, is a town often missed by tourist, however we believe it is definitely worth a visit. Have a look at our program Adventure and Immersion, which includes Kalaw, a trek and the elephant camp.
