The capital of Karen State, Hpa-An is a small, lively city situated on the Salween River, which thrives mainly from trade with neighboring country Thailand. The attractions revolve around a colorful market, the river port and a Buddhist temple decorated with frescoes warning against sins such as narcotics and lust.
However, one of the main reasons for traveling to Hpa An (pronounced as Pah- An), is its breathtaking green and lush scenery of the city’s surrounding.
Among the region most sacred sights, you can climb the 2000 steps until the top of the Mount Zwekabin, located in the East of Hpa An, rising above the surrounding rice fields to a height of 700 meters. Hpa An region is also known for the Salween River that is extending over 2400 kilometers from its source on the Tibetan Plateau. This river is the second – longest river in South-East Asia.
Additionally, caves such as the Kaw Goon also known as “the cave of the Ten Thousand Buddhas’s” is arguably the most spectacular best-preserved cave in the region.
All in all, this laid back and charming city is the perfect destination to escape the hustle and bustle from the city and get lost in the countryside and fields and relax by the Salween River or the foot of Mount Zwekabin.
Memories Travel recommends you to stay at Keinnara Hpa An Eco Lodge (formerly known as: Hpa An Lodge), the ultimate getaway to enjoy the beauty of Hpa An.
