# 文化: 您所不知道的缅甸传统婚礼

Wedding Ceremonies in Myanmar are quite different than what we know in Europe. However, what stays the same are the butterflies and happiness that both the groom and bride feel on this special day. Myanmar Weddings are very colorful and parents, elders, officials and monks play very important roles in a traditional wedding.

Myanmar Traditional Wedding

The first step the couple which wants to get married has to undertake is a visit from the prospective grooms parents at the bride-to-be’s home. There, all the details of the wedding will be discussed, such as date of the wedding, location and what will happen during the ceremony. Even though both families have a close relationship to each other, it is tradition that they must negotiate before coming to a decision.

In some cases, to be sure that the bride and groom are made for each other, parents consult a local astrologer. This is because some families believe that for example Sunday born and Thursday born are not a suitable match. In addition the traditional Myanmar calendar plays an important role when setting the date since several months are not suitable for a successful future relationship such as June or July.

On the day of the wedding it is tradition that the family of the bride dress up the bride in the finest clothes and jewelries that they can afford. She wears a traditional jacket called “htain-me-thein”. The groom dresses up in a men’s silk longyi, a traditional men’s jacket and velvet slippers. Unlike in Europe, the bride and groom wear colorful attire ranging from pink, yellow turquoise etc. however dark colors such as black or blue are usually avoided.

The guests attending the wedding are usually welcomed by the bride’s and groom’s parents. It is custom to bring gifts for the bride and groom which include household appliances. The master of the wedding “Brahmin” manages the whole wedding on the day and assists the couple. He is also the one to announce the start of the ceremony. He recites a special written stanza for the families he blesses the bride and groom with life-long unity and prosperity which ends with traditional music by the orchestra.

After the official ceremony, the guests are treated to food and beverages. It is custom that the married couple then goes home to their new place where their parents wait for them and bless their children. Once the couple tries to enter their bedroom, they are blocked by rows of friends holding gold chains and the bride and groom have to negotiate a price to enter. After they have managed this last “obstacle” they are ready to carry on building a long lasting life together.
