本周景点：曼德勒！

　　Mandalay is the country’s second largest city and a key center of Buddhist learning. The city is located in the north-central Myanmar on the Irrawaddy River. The city has plenty to offer, to keep visitors occupied for a couple of days.

　　It’s key attraction include Maha Myat Muni Pagoda, Myanmar’s second largest pilgrimage site after Shwedagon Pagoda and Mandalay Hill. Visitors can also enjoy relaxing strolls along the banks of the Irrawaddy River, itself a hive of activity. Sagaing Hill, a few kilometers from the main town is, covered with numerous pagodas and meditation centers and well worth a visit.

　　Mandalay city was founded at the foot of Mandalay Hill in 1857 by King Mindon to be his royal capital. However, due to bombings the city and royal palace had to be rebuilt in the 1990s and since then has been booming. The former residence of King Mindon and King Thibaw, Mandalay Palace, is located in the center of the city and is guarded by 4 city walls which are each 2 kilometers long.

　　Another important sight to visit in Mandalay is Mandalay Hill, which is a 240 meters high hill covered in pagodas and spires. The hill offers a 360 Degree Viewpoint over the city with incredible views attracting both tourists and worshipers. The Pagoda on top of Mandalay Hill is a famous pilgrimage site. Supposedly the 45 minute barefoot walk up the stairs is for good health and soul, however you are also able to drive up with a car.

　　We suggest you to visit during sunset in order to watch the sun go down above the city of Mandalay.

　　Furthermore, Mandalay is known for the Maha Myat Muni Pagoda houses the Mahammuni Buddha image, which is the most highly revered Buddha image in the country. The Pagoda was built in 1785 by King Bodawpaya of the Kobaung Dynasty. The Buddha image is 3.80 meters high and seated on a 1.80 m high pedestal. To pay respect to the Buddha, male devotees apply gold leaf to the image, therefore the Buddha is covered in a thick layer of gold leaf of about 15 centimetres, and distorted the shape of the image.

　　The well-known U-Bein brigde is also located in Mandalay. It is the world’s longest teak wood bridge, with a length of 1,209 meters. It is one of Myanmar’s, most photographed sites. In the dry season it seems surreally high, however during the summer rains the area becomes a big lake and the water almost reaches the top of the bridge. A great time to visit the bridge is during sunrise or sunset.

　　Mandalay is definitely a must see on anyone’s trip to Myanmar has it has a lot of diverse activities and sights to offer.
