One of the most recognizable Buddhist landmarks in Myanmar, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock) is precariously balanced on a 1,200-meter hill on the road from Yangon to the Mon State. The site is famous for its giant granite boulder covered with gold leaf, applied by pilgrims for generations, which is crowned with a small stupa.

Legend has it that the rock was placed in its current position by two nats (local spirits) 2,500 years ago and maintains its precarious balance thanks to a hair from Lord Buddha’s head. Shops, facilities, observation terraces and a monastery surround the Golden Rock. Visitors can make the pilgrimage to the top by foot or save their energy and travel by pick-up truck instead.

Furthermore, a year ago the first cable car in Myanmar opened, offering an alternative way to reach the top of the mountain. A total of 44 cable cars were installed and the trip takes around 15 minutes offering an unforgettable experience beautiful views over the area and of the Golden Rock.
