On the 5th of June, Memories Travel organized a community day for their employees and local guides. This day was dedicated to the plastic pollution in Myanmar, which is a relevant topic not only in Myanmar but in the whole world nowadays. Thus, the main theme and slogan of the day was: Think Green, Keep It Clean!
World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment.
Our group of around 40 people started the day with a trip to Shwe Gu Gyi Taw Ya Monastery School, close to Bago in order to educate school children about the harm of plastic and introduce a dedicated recycling system to their school.
The children were very enthusiastic and interested to know more about the effect plastic has on the environment, animals but also us humans. One of the main issues in Myanmar is the burning of trash, which some of the children admitted to also doing; however this is a very dangerous way of trying to get rid of plastic. Toxic gases are released into their air and can cause serious diseases and health issues to the population. Therefore, amongst other thematics this issue was raised to stop the pollution, raise awareness and keep Myanmar clean.
Afterwards, Memories Travel donated some stationaries, recycling bins and money to the monastery as well as meals for all of the children. We were able to walk around the school and interact with the students for example through football. The students were given their lunch and dedicated their prayers to us.
Then, our group said their goodbyes and continued the journey to a local restaurant. It was a very rewarding experience for both parties.
The next destination was the Shwe Pyi Resort where fun activities were organized. The first activity planned, was Paddle Boat racing on the lake. Five boats were competing against each other, while the rest were cheering them on. After that, we continued the team Building activities, such as egg racing, blindfold navigation and other races, which involved the whole group. The last hour was dedicated to free time and some colleagues rented a bike to explore the natural sights of Shwe Pyi Resort, while others just enjoyed the beautiful view from the Café.
The day ended with a Dinner in Yangon, where pictures of the successful day were shared amongst each other and prizes were given to the winning team of the afternoon activities. This Community Day dedicated to the environment was a great way to raise awareness in a fun and exciting way about the plastic pollution amongst the locals but also the employees of Memories Travel.
We believe that the message: “Think Green, Keep it Clean” was successfully spread and everyone will continue to dedicate their time to say No to Plastic and avoid it as much as possible in the future.
